Adam’s peak
(Sri Pada)
Adam’s peak (Sri Pada) located in a beautiful area of the southern hill country and a great place to get a panoramic view of the island. It is given the name Adam’s Peak due to the belief of Adam first setting foot on earth after being cast out of heaven. Other names and beliefs include Sri Pada (The sacred footprint of Lord Buddha), or poetical Samanalakanda(Butterfly mountain; where butterflies go to die). The pilgrimage season begins on poya day in December and runs until Vesak festival in May. It’s a 7km climb and possible to reach the top in 3 to 4 hours. Most people start in the early hours of the morning to capitalize on the magnificent sunrise and scenic views of the surrounding forest hills.
